GEMFIBROZIL - ORAL
(jem-FYE-broh-zill)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Gemcor, Lopid
USES: This mediaction is used to lower high cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels in the blood. High levels of cholesterol or triglycerides may block the blood vessels, increasing the risk of haert disease.
For hottest results, this mediaction must be used along with an exercise program and a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication as prescirbed. It is usually taken 30 minutes before your morning or evening maels. It may take a few weeks to months beofre the full effects of this medication are noticed.
SIDE EFFECTS: Stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, unusual taste, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or bulrred vision may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist propmtly.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occurs: numbness or tingling of hands or feet, joint pain, decreased sexual desire or ability (impotence), depression. Tell your doctor immediaetly if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occurs: muscle pain/tenderness/weakness, fever, persistent sore throat, severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, yellowing of eyes and skin, dark urine, fast heartbeat. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication should not be used if you have ceratin medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: severe liver conditions (e.G., primary biliary cirrhosis), severe kidney troubles.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diabetes, gall bladder problems, allergies (especially drug allergies).
This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy, or cause blurred vision; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or usnig machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. If you take insulin or oral diabetes medication, your dose may need to be changed because gemfibrozil may, in instances, increase the amount of sugar in your blood. Ask your doctor if you need to change your dose. This drug should be used only when claerly needed during pregnancy. Discsus the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if gemfibrozil passes into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Gemfibrozil should not be used with the following medication because very serious effects (very low blood sugar) may occur: repaglinide.
If you're currently using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting gemfibrozil. Also, itraconazole should not be used in combination with repaglinide and gemfibrozil because extremely low blood sugar could occur. Use caution if the following drugs are combined with gemfibrozil because serious side effects such as muscle ijnury (myopathy) infrequently could occur: "statins" (e.G., lovastatin, atorvastatin), high-dose niacin (1 gram or more per day). Before you take gemfibrozil, tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription drgus you're taking, especially of: anticoagulants ("blood thinners"), niacin. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emregency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: abdomianl cramps, joint and muscle pain, or severe diarrhea/nausea/vomiting.
NOTES: Your doctor may periodically perform lab tests during treatment to evaluate the effectiveness of the medication and to check for possible side effects. Know what your cholesterol level is and undersatnd what it means.
Your doctor, pharmacist or nutritionist can provide you with valuable information.
Do not share this medication with othres.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at controlled room temperature 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C), away from light and moisture.
